Boy Scouts of America

Age Requirement: Some of the positions with Boy Scouts are available at the age of 18, and the rest are available at 21.

About the Boy Scouts: The Boy Scouts of America's mission is "to serve others by helping to instill values in young people and, in other ways, to prepare them to make ethical choices during their lifetime in achieving their full potential."

Volunteer Information: Volunteers lead the activities of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Some volunteers help with packs while others work at the district or council level. Adult volunteers act as role models to the boys as they teach them values for their lives.

About Callaway Gardens: Callaway Gardens was created to provide a wholesome family environment where all may find beauty, relaxation, inspiration, and a better understanding of the living world.

Volunteer Information: Volunteers are used in twenty locations throughout the Gardens. They are broken down into three areas: Information, Education, and Horticulture. Specifically, Volunteers are needed at the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center, the John A. Sibley Horticultural Center, the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center, the Ida Cason Callaway Memorial Chapel. the Pioneer Log Cabin, and Mr. Cason's Vegetable Garden. Additionally, volunteers are used on trails throughout the Gardens and in offices doing clerical work.

Carpenter's Way Ranch

About Carpenter's Way Ranch: Carpenter's Way Ranch is a foster home for boys of abuse, abandon or neglect who are between the ages of 6 and 18. It is a Christian ministry which teaches life skills while providing a stable family environment.

Volunteer Information: Volunteers are needed to help with special activities and to work as tutors in the school and after school hours. Groups may help by working on the grounds doing general yard work. Families may "adopt" a boy to take on weekends and include in their regular family activities.

About DFACS: The Department of Family and Children Services helps the community in three major ways. First they provide public assistance. Second, they give emergency assistance, and third, they teach employability skills.

Volunteer Information: Volunteers are needed in the office and to help with programs. A Christmas toy drive, Adopt-A-Grandparent, and the Christmas for needy families programs are all volunteer driven. One new program is being added this year: a clothing closet.

About FDR State Park: F.D. Roosevelt State Park exists to preserve and protect the varied resources encompassed in the park, while giving the public access to these resources.

Volunteer Information: Volunteers are used in two areas: interpretive planning and general maintenance. In the interpretive planning area, volunteers help with environmental programs, and general maintenance gives volunteers a chance to help keep the park in good shape.

Fellowship of Christians United in Service (F.O.C.U.S.)

About F.O.C.U.S: The Fellowship of Christians United in Service provides affordable family clothing, free food and other aid to needy families in Harris County. Their purpose is to minister to the material and spiritual needs of the community and share Christian fellowship.

Volunteer Information: F.O.C.U.S. operates a thrift shop Wednesday-Saturday, which is run by local volunteers. Clothing is sorted, hung and sold at the shop. Thanksgiving is when the most volunteers are needed to help with the Thanksgiving food drive. People are needed to collect, buy and sort food, as well as making and distributing the baskets.

Good Shepherd Therapeutic Center

About Good Shepherd Therapeutic Center: The Good Shepherd Therapeutic Center works with the handicapped, the elderly and children to provide therapy for mental and physical handicaps through animals.

Volunteer Information: Volunteers are used to assist with programs such as the Animal Assistance Program, which takes animals to nursing homes, and the Therapeutic Horse Program, which uses horseback riding as therapy. These two programs need experienced volunteers to feed the animals over the weekend. The Able House, a boys’ home, also uses volunteers.

Age Requirement: 9 and older, parents encouraged to work with younger children

About 4-H: 4-H is the youth development program of the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service. It is a "learn by doing" program with many opportunities to develop knowledge, leadership and citizenship skills.

Volunteer Information: Volunteers are needed to help with special interest groups such as shooting sports, poultry and livestock judging, camping, horsing and cotton boll. Knowledge is not required. Project group leaders are also needed for District Project Achievement categories. Fundraising help is needed at the rodeo and the Ossahatchee Pow-wow.

Harris County Unit of the American Cancer Society

About the American Cancer Society: The ACS is an organization, which works with the community to promote cancer awareness and control. It also helps with rehabilitation needs and patient services for cancer patients and their families. Raising money for cancer research and education programs is another goal of the ACS.

Volunteer Information: Volunteers are used to raise money and help at fundraising events. Relay for Life is one such event, in which people are needed to form teams and raise money.

About the Boys and Girls Club: The Boys and Girls Club operates a summer recreation program at the Carver Resource Center for children ages 6-12. The program runs from 9 am to 6 p.m. with extended hours from 7:30 am to 8:45 p.m. The program is run as a block rotation with time scheduled for recreation and social activities.

Volunteer Information: Volunteers are needed to help run the activities such as sports/fitness, cultural arts and the Ready to Read program.

Harris County Habitat for Humanity

About Habitat for Humanity: Habitat is a Christian Organization working to eliminate sub-standard and low-income housing by partnering with families who help build their own new houses and houses for others by giving of their own time (500 hours of "Sweat Equity") and by paying for the material and professional costs associated with building their new home. Habitat offers a hand up, not a hand out. They meet monthly on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM at Hamilton United Methodist Church. Meetings are open to the public.

Volunteer Information: Volunteers are needed for fundraising, supervised house construction and organizational support. No experience is needed.

About the Library: The Harris County Library is committed to meeting the educational and informational needs of the community, as well as encouraging pre-school children to develop a love of reading.

Volunteer Information: Volunteers are used to shelve books, find and replace out-of-place books, and help with Children's' programs, such as weekly storytelling and the summer reading program.

About the Recreation Department: The Harris County Recreation Department provides recreational opportunities for children and teenagers. Teams are organized in soccer, football, cheerleading, baseball, softball, t-ball, and basketball for ages 4-18.

Volunteer Information: Coaches are needed in all ages of all sports.

Volunteer Information: Volunteers are needed to help with projects in classrooms, to run off papers, to tutor students, to speak to classes on subject area topics, to help in the offices, to donate materials for projects or prizes for contests, to take pictures for the yearbook.

HCCMS Library: The library needs volunteers who are at least high school age, to shelve, bind, cover, catalog books, to change bulletin boards, to create displays or to work with the magazine collection. Storytellers and people with special skills such as artists, dancers, clowns, puppeteers, ventriloquists, magicians, musicians, singers, or any other interest, are needed to help teach the children about different areas.

About the Senior Center: The Harris county Senior Center is a place where seniors may come together to participate in programs offered such as fellowship, games, t.v., movies, crafts, ceramics and educational programs.

Volunteer Information: Volunteers are needed to provide and help with programs and activities. Help is also needed to maintain flower beds and do yard work and other manual tasks.

  • Antioch VFD meets the first Monday of each month at the fire station located at 210 Lickskillet Road. The meetings begin at 8:00 PM. Contact R.M. Land, 324-1880.

  • Cataula VFD meets the second and last Thursday night each month at the fire station located at 107 Raymond Drive. Meetings begin at 7:00 PM. Contact Chief Jim Gaus, 576-4653.

  • Ellerslie VFD meets the third Monday of the month at the fire station located at 13425 Warm Springs Road. Meetings begin at 7:00 PM. Contact Rick Camp, 561-0628.

  • Hamilton VFD meets the first and third Mondays of each month at the fire station located at 210 Walton Street. (This is part of City Hall.) Meetings begin at 7:00 PM. Contact Chief Rodger Hamby, 628-5790, Assistant Chief John Steward, 628-4231, or Hamilton City Hall, 628-5321.

  • Hopewell VFD (will soon merge with the NW Harris VFD) meets the first Tuesday of each month at the station on Hopewell Church Road. Meetings begin at 8:00 PM. Contact Chief Roger Duke, 663-8611.

  • Melody Lakes VFD meets the second Tuesday of each month at the fire station located at 934 Melody Drive in the Melody Lakes subdivision. Meetings start at 7:30 PM. Contact Chief Bill Waltman, 582-3014.

  • Mountain Hill VFD meets the second Monday of each month at 210 Lickskillet Road. Meetings start at 7:00 PM. Contact Chief John Gelsomino, 327-7348 or 649-5636.

  • Northwest Harris VFD meets the first and third Thursday at the fire station located at the end of Whitesville road at the old school. Meetings start at 7:00 PM. Contact Chief Ron Rollins, 663-4447, or Captain Cason Callaway, 663-2266.

  • Pine Mountain VFD meets the second Saturday at 9:00 AM and the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. Meetings are held at the fire station on McDougald Avenue behind Pine Mountain City Hall.   • Pine Mountain Valley VFD meets the second and fourth Tuesday at the fire station located on Park Lane behind the Pine Mountain Valley ball field. Contact Chief Jack McClung, 628-5726 or Assistant Chief Ricky Hood, 628-5970.

  • Shiloh VFD meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at the fire station on Main Street next to City Hall. Meetings begin at 7:00 PM. Contact Chief Keith Marion, 846-2190 or Assistant Chief Ric Buren, 846-4495.

  • Waverly Hall VFD meets the third Saturday of each month at the fire station located on GA Highway 85, just south of the Village Green Park. (no time given) Contact Chief Tommy Ward, 582-2844 or Waverly Hall City Hall, 582-2381.

  • West Point Fire Department volunteers meet the second Thursday of each month at the fire station located at 100 West 7th Street. Meetings start at 6:00 PM. Contact Chief Gary Harrison, 645-3508. This fire department is made up of both paid staff and volunteers.

About the Animal Shelter: Morning Star Animal Shelter takes in stray animals or those put up for adoption, and places them in a foster care situation until they are adopted.

Volunteer Information: Volunteers are needed to act as "foster parents" for animals brought to the shelter. Help is needed in the shelter as well.
