Habitat for Humanity Merger

Habitat for HumanityHabitat for Humanity Merger Means Stronger Communities through Decent, Affordable Housing

LaGrange GA May 2013 —
Another local Habitat for Humanity affiliate has joined forces with Troup County. Merger discussions with Harris County began formally in August 2012 and were finalized earlier this year. As a result Harris County joined Troup County’s affiliate, and now covers five counties in western Georgia and eastern Alabama.
The two affiliates have merged resources and volunteers and will now serve all of Harris, Troup, Chambers, Randolph and Heard counties.
“Our purpose remains the same as a non-profit Christian Housing Ministry, we are proud to work with the local communities to provide simple, decent, energy efficient, affordable shelter for low-income families and create sustainable changes to our neighborhoods.” said Carol Evans President of the new appointed Board of Directors .
Executive Director Steven W. Brown continued to say “Since 1991, The combined Habitat for Humanity affiliates and donors have generously provided local resources to build 71 homes and refurbish 24 homes for families, neighbors and friends in five counties including Troup, Chambers, Randolph and more recently Heard and now Harris Counties.”
Through volunteer labor, efficient management and donations of money and materials, Habitat energy homes are built or refurbished and sold to partner families at no profit. They are financed with affordable, no interest mortgages which are geared to the families’ financial circumstances.
Habitat for Humanity offers a “hand up not a hand out.” It is not a give-away program. In addition to mortgage payments, each homeowner contributes 300 hours of unpaid labor into the building of their home and other homes. This is called “Sweat Equity”. Sweat equity increase pride of ownership and reduces Habitat’s costs.
The new organization includes 18 members representing their communities who will serve on its Board of Directors.

“This merger is to not be competitive within our county in donations and volunteers but collaborative to continue the mission of Habitat for Humanity,” Cay Grant said in a release. “By pooling our resources and expertise Habitat for Humanity has the administrative support needed to continue with today’s guidelines of grants, builds, sponsorships, the ReStore and programs. By streamlining operations the merged affiliate the combined boards now can focus on assisting qualified partner families in fulfilling their dream of home ownership.”
